Introduction :
Charango is an imitation of European guitar after the invasion of Spain in the 16th century. It is one of several hybrid musical instruments found in the Andes as a result of contacts between European and native cultures. It has the general shape of a small Spanish guitar, with five double strings, while its sound box consists of the carapace of an armadillo. An armadillo looks like a rat with armor (pangolin). Its head is as tiny as a rat’s head. Its body is larger than a rabbit, wrapped in a hard shell with a long tail.
Charango is primarily played in traditional Andean music, and is sometimes used by other Latin American musicians. Many contemporary charangos are now made with different types of wood.
