Introduction :

Damaru drum with whirling balls; in the shape of an hourglass, it is also called a skull drum when made from human crania. Damaru is used in a variety of ceremonies, often in association with the rkang-gling. It is normally played inside Tibetan monasteries or by Bon monks.

Damaru is in the form of an hourglass, and thus symbolizes the eternal and inexorable passage of time, leading ultimately to death, within the cycle of human existence. But is also implies the possibility of a reversal, a return to an original state. Reversal of the drum is necessary for the flow to be maintained. Continuous movement and communication are effected by passage through the bottleneck. Emptiness and fullness follow one another in succession, moving from above to below, from the heavenly to the terrestrial.

In ritual usage, the manipulation and playing of the damaru must be carried out using precisely ordained gestures. The instrument should never be put down on its end, but positioned so that the male skull (the skin of which is supposed to have been coated with sperm) is to the musician’s right, while the female skull (smeared with menstrual blood) is to the left. This arrangement follows the traditional established order of father / mother, right / left, masculine / feminine.

The celebrant holds the instrument by its handle and rotates it with a sharp flick of the wrist, causing the balls to strike the two skins of the drum simultaneously. The exact sounds will differ, depending on the rhythm of the texts, but they are typically described as “terrible sounds”, “thunderclaps”, or a “crack”.

在儀式中，必須使用正確、受戒的手勢演奏 damaru。Damaru亦不應隨意擺放，男性頭骨的一面（鼓面被精子塗抹的一面），應該擺放於演奏家的右邊，而女性頭骨的一面（鼓面被月經血塗抹的一面），則擺放在左邊。這樣的擺放位置，是遵循父親 / 母親、右 / 左、陽剛 / 陰柔傳統的既定秩序。

主持祭禮的祭司手持 damaru，用手腕旋轉它，令附着的旋轉球自動地敲打兩邊的鼓面。根據不同的節奏，所發出的聲音會有所不同。但其聲音通常被形容為『可怕的聲音』、『雷鳴的聲音』或『裂縫的聲音』。
